It’s how things have always been
Is what I commonly hear to defend
Tradition, the pinnacle of humanity
It guides us from life’s apparent vanity
It’s the hopscotch to live a good life
To minimize inevitable strife
I eat this way and do this praise
And a question you do not raise
For questions bring uncertainty
Whether it’s what to do or who to be
So we go along because it’s how it’s always been
And no, tradition you do not bend
Tradition gives life simplicity
And to go outside of it is a bit risky
Look what tradition has brought us thus far
Dinners, gifts, and ball drops at a bar
Our memories sealed with a rose on them all
Traditions for winter, spring, summer and fall
But I know you have your thoughts
We’re human and it comes with some faults
Maybe you push them away
To prove your faith has little sway
I’ll be honest about thinking, “Should it be this way?”
I ponder if some tradition should stay
I know this means I’m a heretic
And that drives some people so sick
But my name isn’t Truman
How my days will go isn’t already punched in
Now sure, the path ahead is all but mystery
But that’ll make my life some exciting story
